Time

A super tricky and complicated skill, but an absolutely vital one! 
By the end of the year the children need to be able to read times to the nearest 5 minutes in analogue and digital form.

This week, we've only focused on the nearest quarter of an hour.
Please do practice this wherever possible - using quarter past, quarter to, half past and o'clock.

I use a clock that is split down the middle and is a different colour each side to show TO and PAST sides.




Also using pizza as an analogy
Quarter of a pizza - quarter past or quarter to
Half past = half a pizza


Once the children can read o'clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to analogue times they need to be able to convert this to digital.
Counting the minute hand around in 5s is the skill needed here.

We encourage the children to write the multiples of 5 around the edge to show how many minutes past the minute hand has travelled to start with.


When reading times to the nearest 5 minutes they must always start back at 12 and count around in 5s!
